On June 28, 2022, a new Sonic Frontiers presentation featuring all new Cyberspace levels aired on Nintendo Direct Mini. It initially demonstrated what to anticipate from Starfall Island before highlighting the fresh locations gamers will get to explore.
Here is the full Nintendo Direct mini. The Sonic Frontiers segment starts at 16 minutes in and the Cyberspace zone appears at the 16:35 mark.
According to the footage, players can explore Sonic Frontiers’ cyberspace levels when they find a gate that can transport them there. These look like more traditional and linear Sonic zones you might be familiar with if you played previous 3D Sonic games. Upon completion, the cyberspace levels award Sonic keys he can use to progress his quest of exploring the vast mysterious island he woke up on.
This showcase also supposedly gives us our first glimpse of how Frontiers fares on the Switch. And the performance looks very good, even if it’s obvious the resolution had to be reduced by one or two margins.
Despite the little Switch blurriness, this Sonic Frontiers teaser is perhaps the best one we’ve seen thus far. The most obvious difference between this and any previous showing is the combat. Which looked dog water previously. SEGA is either working hard to fix the previous “silliness” of it, or this footage is just doctored to look better. Only time will tell!
Finding out how many of these Cyberspace levels there are will be intriguing. Is Frontiers really a typical Sonic game, or are they only tiny bonuses?
Here’s a brief official description of the game from the Official Sonic Frontiers Website:
“Worlds will collide in Sonic the Hedgehog‘s newest adventure. An experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-velocity open-zone freedom. Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands—landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts, and more! Journey into new realms. Sonic Frontiers will be released during the 2022 Christmas season, for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
