Elden Ring just keeps writing history and its streak of being the best-selling game of the year is unlikely to be stopped any time soon!
Since its debut earlier this year, Elden Ring has been such a huge hit that its sales have propelled it into one of the all-time best-selling games in the US. Unsurprisingly, the game continued to be the best-selling game of the month in June. It is currently the best-selling U.S game to date in 2022. Projections suggest that it will stay that way till the end of the year!
Mat Piscatella, executive director and video game industry advisor of the NPD group, made a thread of tweets of all relevant that NPD collected so far. He first claimed that Elden Ring is among the top 10 best-selling games in U.S history. Although later he retracted that statement citing the lack of data necessary to make that claim.
Still, Elden Ring is supposedly one of the best-selling U.S games, and that’s huge. Whether top 10, 20, or 50, doesn’t matter much, as it’s still a historic achievement.
2022’s best-selling games in the U.S. year-to-date are:
- Elden Ring
- LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
- Pokemon Legends: Arceus
- Horizon Forbidden West
- MLB The Show 22
- Call of Duty: Vanguard
- Gran Turismo 7
- Kirby and the Forgotten Land
- Mario Kart 8
- Madden NFL 22
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- Minecraft
- FIFA 22
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Monster Hunter: Rise
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Mario Party Superstars
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Dying Light 2: Stay Human
In his U.S video game market analysis from last week, Piscatella predicted that Elden Ring will finish as best selling 2022 game. “Elden Ring will finish as 2022’s best-selling premium game in the U.S. market, marking only the 3rd time since 2009 that a Call of Duty franchise release does not lead the market,” wrote Piscatella.
Bandai Namco announced Elden Ring had sold 13.4 million copies worldwide in May 2022 and the game has definitely added more to that total in the two months that have passed since. Next time Bandai or FromSoft shares the data of units sold we will know for sure if Elden Ring will enter the pantheon of the best-selling videogames ever.
In my humble opinion, it’s definitely possible. The bar for entry to top 50 best-selling video games in history is 22,200,000 currently being held by New Super Mario Bros. U. Given that Elden Ring already sold 13.5 million copies it’s possible! Especially since it’s almost guaranteed that the game will receive a massive DLC that will reinvigorate sales.
